A little background as to why and how I made Position Accelerator Soccer Shirts (P.A.S.S.)©
Soccer is my son’s first organized team sport; he started at the age of 5. Like a lot of parents who have their child play soccer for the first time, I did not know much about the sport except there is a ball and two goals with the idea that to score the ball had to go in one of them - hopefully the other teams. After a few practices, he fell in love with the game and things progressed quickly.
Wanting to relate and speak to him about the game, I bought some coaching manuals and read as much as possible. I became intrigued; so intrigued that after three games into the first season I offered to be the assistant coach.
Then, a year later became the main coach, and two years after that became President of the local soccer club.
Soccer was in my blood!
When the team hit U8 we needed to step up the practices to improve individual skills, and introduce simple dead ball situations like throw-in’s and kickoff's.
At U9 we played inter-league among 11 other clubs. Our record was excellent up to this point. The player’s heads were bursting with confidence. Well, let me tell you, our first fall U9 season was less then stellar. We only took one game.
Improving team performance...
Sitting down and analyzing the results of the fall season, I knew more was needed. The boys now had good individual skills but were confused on what to do when in different game situations, and when positioned on different areas of the field.
Many different ideas and concepts were tried. Some worked, however it took a lot of time and energy to get through. There had to be an easier, better and less complicated way to explain soccer strategies. For the next two seasons the team got better through persistence, determination and hard work.
Then the breakthrough...
Kyle (my son) tried out and made a U11 competitive soccer team. This put me out of a “coaching job” (temporarily). The blessing was now I could sit back and watch how the new competitive coach taught. Ironically, he had the same problems when it came to tactical and situational drills.
The answer finally hit me...
Thinking of Kyle’s practice one night (the team being 11 year old boys) they had a limited attention span. The coach would speak about field responsibilities; the team, however, just wanted to play soccer, not listen to a monologue.
What they needed was a way to visualize what the coach wanted without a long speech and confusing concepts. Hence, P.A.S.S.© was born!
Having each player see fellow teammates in their respective area, wearing different colors and having the position clearly marked, the notion of placement, space and tactics would become visually clear.
To see if the t-shirts worked, a rather complicated play was developed which the team had never practiced. They put the shirts on and I explained what had to happen for the drill to work, then sat back and watched. Instantly their eyes lit up. It only took a couple of rotations for them to understand what I was trying to get across.
When speaking to the team after practice, they mentioned wishing they had the t-shirts years earlier, so they could have been better today without all the confusion and aggravation along the way.
After more practices using P.A.S.S©, speeches and aggravation went down, performance and understanding went way up. I’m happy to say that the story and success continue to grow.
If you already use the program, I thank you for your support. If not, I hope you will try them for yourself and see just how much easier it is to demonstrate tactical situations, positions, and strategies, and how they will make your practices become more efficient and fun.
If you have a question, please feel free to contact me by e-mail, or telephone. I’m here to help you and your team succeed.
Thank you! Sid Pfisterer
